Ajax's €10m gamble on Caio Henrique to fix left‑back woes

🇳🇱

Ajax are on the brink of completing the signing of 28‑year‑old Brazilian Caio Henrique on a contract that runs to mid‑2030, with a minimum fee of €10 million and €4 million in bonuses. The deal represents the first major purchase under sporting director Jordi Cruijff and is intended to resolve the club’s persistent left‑back problem.

Negotiations have been described as heavy, and the €10 million base price reflects Ajax’s willingness to invest heavily to secure the player. The financial commitment also includes performance‑related bonuses that could raise the total outlay to €14 million.

Jordan Teze, the former PSV defender, praised Henrique’s qualities, saying, “His biggest strength lies on the ball. He is technically good, strong in the small space and finds free people. I would not think he is a left back.” Teze made the comments while speaking to the during the World Cup.

Henrique began his career at Santos, moved to Atlético Madrid at 18 as a midfielder, and later joined AS Monaco where he was signed during the COVID‑19 pandemic after a brief spell at Gremio. He also spent time on loan at Fluminense under coach Fernando Diniz, who repositioned him from midfield to left back.

Niko Kovac, Monaco’s coach, described Henrique as “an excellent example of a good professional. He works hard and is always involved. He is young, but also a real example for younger players.” Kovac’s endorsement highlights the player’s work ethic and leadership potential.

Ajax’s left‑back position has been unsettled since the departure of Jorrel Hato, with John Heitinga and Marcel Keizer giving Owen Wijndal another chance before the issue resurfaced. Former Premier League players Oleksandr Zinchenko and Takehiro Tomiyasu failed to solve the problem due to injuries, and Lucas Rosa also struggled in the role.

New manager Míchel plans to build patiently with diverse patterns, believing Henrique’s technique and passing can rescue the team from tight situations. His style has drawn comparisons to former Ajax favourite Maxwell.

At Monaco, Henrique distinguished himself with a trademark final pass, a skill Ajax first observed in a practice duel where he set up a goal. In Ligue 1 he recorded 36 assists in 158 duels and has earned five caps for Brazil, the latest in September 2023. After a serious cruciate ligament injury that sidelined him for eight months, he returned stronger, faster and more agile; he will turn 29 next month and is in the final year of a contract in the fiscally favourable Principality.

Johan Inan Ajax hope the €10 million gamble will finally plug the left‑back gap and bolster the club’s immediate title ambitions, providing a durable solution after a series of short‑term fixes.
