Ajax's new regime under Míchel forces intense training, says Baas

🇳🇱
Ajax defender Youri Baas praised the overhaul of the club’s coaching staff under head coach Míchel after the team’s 1‑3 training defeat to Panathinaikos, noting a markedly more intensive conditioning regime. He highlighted the shift towards two daily sessions and a Spanish‑style approach, contrasting it with last season’s routine. Baas said the conditioning focus is a clear departure from the previous campaign. He cited a comment from staff member Bosz, who told the camera of VoetbalPrimeur, “It is a different way of training, especially conditionally. I have heard it is really Spanish. You notice it is intensive, often with two sessions a day.” According to Baas, the language barrier is minimal. He explained, “I think Míchel also has English lessons. They all speak okay English. Sometimes he has to repeat it twice, but it works fine.” The defender noted that the new regime already feels distinct compared with last season’s training rhythm. He believes the intensified schedule could raise the squad’s physical standards. Baas expects the players to adapt further as the season progresses, suggesting the intensified approach may become a defining trait of Míchel’s tenure. If the current trajectory holds, Ajax’s preseason preparations could set a new benchmark for conditioning within the Dutch league. The 1‑3 loss to Panathinaikos served as the first practical test of the new methods. Baas felt the heavy workload contributed to the defeat but viewed it as a learning opportunity.
