Ajax secures Spanish youth talent Jano Monserrate in four‑year deal
Jano Monserrate has officially become an Ajax player, signing a four‑year contract after moving from Atlético Madrid to the Dutch capital. The 20‑year‑old Spanish midfielder will initially be assigned to Jong Ajax, the club’s reserve side.
The transfer was confirmed on Wednesday when news broke from Spain that Ajax were close to securing Monserrate. Final details concerning potential bonuses for Atlético and a resale percentage were the last points to be settled before all parties agreed and the move was completed, after which Monserrate was presented in Amsterdam.
Monserrate, a central and attacking midfielder, has been a Spanish youth international and has featured in Atlético’s youth setup since 2024. He also made his senior debut for Los Rojiblancos under coach Diego Simeone last season, accumulating two official appearances for the first team.
Two years ago he started for Spain in the UEFA Under‑19 European Championship final, a match the Netherlands won. That game saw Ajax’s Joeri Heerkens, Mark Verkuijl and Don‑Angelo Konadu represent the Dutch side, players Monserrate is likely to meet at Jong Ajax.
Technical director Jordi Cruijff identified Monserrate as his second summer acquisition, indicating the club’s strategic focus on young midfield talent. The signing aligns with Ajax’s policy of developing prospects within their reserve team before promoting them to the first squad.
For Ajax, the addition bolsters the depth of Jong Ajax and provides a potential future option for the senior midfield. For Monserrate, the move offers a platform to continue his development in the Netherlands and to integrate with fellow Spanish‑trained players already at the club.
