US Embassy Alerts Dutch Fans; Minky Worden Cautions Border Risks

🇳🇱
The US embassy in The Hague warned Dutch fans traveling to the 2026 World Cup to allow extra travel time because airports are expected to be busy, especially at customs. Travelers must carry a valid passport and either a visa or an ESTA. The embassy clarified that an ESTA is a short‑term travel authorization, not a visa. Since 25 January 2025 US authorities accept only “M” or “V” as gender markers on ESTA and visa applications, requiring travelers to state their sex at birth. The travel advice notes that US officials have tightened entry checks for LGBTQ+ visitors, limiting gender options to “M” or “V”. Human Rights Watch director Minky Worden warned that fans could be detained at the border for social‑media statements or participation in pro‑Palestinian protests. The advisory also mentions possible searches of phones, computers, cameras, and the presence of ICE agents and National Guard troops in several host cities. Customs and Border Protection officer Matt Davies said the likelihood of a Dutch traveler’s phone being inspected is low. He added that passengers on domestic flights should remember that flares, any form of fireworks, and compressed‑air horn devices are prohibited. The tournament opens with Mexico facing South Africa on 11 June at 19:00, while the Netherlands play Japan on 14 June at 22:00. FIFA expects 48 nations to compete and projects 6.5 million visitors, 40 percent of whom will be international. The KNVB estimates 5,000 Dutch supporters will attend matches in the stadiums and another 5,000 will join the fan walk that precedes each game, noting many Americans of Dutch heritage live in the host cities. The Mexican embassy advises fans to keep flight and hotel details, travel insurance, and proof of sufficient funds readily available for immigration checks. The Canadian embassy points visitors to its government site, stressing that a match ticket does not guarantee entry and that a tourist visa or electronic travel authorization is required.
