City claims succession plan, Chelsea cries foul over Maresca move

🇬🇧
Enzo Maresca was announced today as Manchester City’s new manager, signing a contract that runs to June 2029 after terminating his Chelsea FC role by mutual consent on 1 January. The move triggers a reported €20 million compensation package, with both clubs acknowledging a settlement. Manchester City released a counter‑statement asserting that Maresca had long been part of their succession planning and that confidential discussions took place with select City representatives in Autumn and Winter 2025 while he was Chelsea’s head coach. The club said these talks explored a transitional leadership role should Pep Guardiola depart. Chelsea FC responded that City approached their coach last autumn, breaching the terms of his long‑term contract which, according to the club, he had no right to terminate. Chelsea added that his mid‑season exit disrupted their campaign. During his tenure, Maresca led Chelsea to lift the FIFA Club World Cup trophy after a 2025 final win over Paris Saint‑Germain at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey on 13 July 2025. He also celebrated a UEFA Conference League triumph against Real Betis Balompie at Stadion Wroclaw on 28 May 2025. Sky Sport Italia reported the compensation package at €20 million, a figure later confirmed by multiple English outlets. In addition to the club settlement, Maresca is said to have personally compensated Chelsea for the contractual breach. The contrasting narratives from City and Chelsea highlight the growing tension over managerial poaching in the Premier League. The settlement suggests that future clubs may need clearer protocols when courting coaches still under contract.
