Derry City bolster defence with Irish youngster Christy Grogan

Irish defender Christy Grogan, 20, has left Stockport County to join Derry City of the League of Ireland. The transfer is for an undisclosed fee and awaits international clearance.

He joined Stockport from Stoke City last summer after ten years with the Potters. At Stoke, he spent a decade developing as a defender.

Grogan struggled to break through at Stockport and was limited to two appearances in the EFL Trophy. The lack of game time prompted a loan move.

In December, he joined National League side Aldershot Town on loan. The loan was intended to give him regular senior football.

County recalled him in April because of an injury crisis. He then featured in two League One matches for the club.

Stockport County said, "We thank Christy for his efforts during his time as a County player and wish him well for the future." The statement was released shortly after confirming his departure.

Derry City must obtain international clearance before Grogan can be registered. The paperwork will determine how soon he can feature in the League of Ireland season.
