Inter Milan say goodbye to Sommer and Acerbi after years of service

🇮🇹

The Giuseppe Meazza Stadium echoed with applause one last time for two defenders of the Nerazzurri shirt. Yann Sommer and Francesco Acerbi walked away from Inter Milan today as their contracts expired, bringing an end to spells that defined recent eras at the club.

The club’s statement was simple and direct: ‘Thank you for everything.’ Sommer, 37, leaves after three seasons as Inter’s undisputed first-choice goalkeeper. In 100 Serie A games he helped secure a trophy haul that included two league titles, the Coppa Italia, the Supercoppa Italiana and a Champions League final appearance in 2024-25.

Acerbi, 38, departs after four seasons in Milan. The centre-back made 101 Serie A appearances for the club and collected two league crowns, two Coppa Italia wins, two Supercoppa Italiana medals and two Champions League runner-up finishes in 2022-23 and 2024-25.

Both players arrived within a year of each other: Sommer in the summer of 2023, Acerbi in 2022. Their departures leave a combined total of 201 Serie A appearances and 287 across all competitions on the club’s records.

Inter’s farewell messages underscored the club’s gratitude for their contributions. The club’s official announcement carried no further details beyond the single sentence of thanks.

Elsewhere in the squad, two more first-team members are also out of contract. Stefan De Vrij and Matteo Darmian’s agreements expired on the same day as Sommer’s and Acerbi’s.

De Vrij, the Dutch defender, is understood to be on the verge of joining Panathinaikos in Athens. Reports in Italy suggest Darmian, meanwhile, may take a backroom role at Inter or continue his playing career elsewhere in Serie A.

The exits mark the close of one cycle at Inter Milan and open another chapter for the club’s leadership group.
