Jurrien Timber Misses 2026 World Cup, Sunderland Call-Up

🇳🇱

Jurrien Timber has been withdrawn from the Netherlands squad for the 2026 World Cup because his groin injury has not healed sufficiently. The 24‑year‑old defender will miss the tournament and will leave the national team’s pre‑camp in New York after the match against Uzbekistan. Lutsharel Geertruida of Sunderland has been called up as his replacement.

The KNVB announced the decision in a statement on Monday, citing medical advice that Timber could not participate responsibly. The association said Timber will depart the pre‑camp following the Uzbekistan game. Alex Pantling supplied the accompanying photograph of Timber.

Timber suffered the groin problem in mid‑March against Everton, a setback that raised questions after his clearance for the Champions League final versus Paris Saint-Germain. He logged 54 minutes plus injury time in that final. Justin Setterfield provided the image of Timber’s appearance.

Since joining Arsenal from Ajax in 2023, Timber has missed 78 matches for Arsenal and the Netherlands, 53 of which were due to an ACL injury sustained in his first season. His contract runs until 2028, and Arsenal are reportedly close to extending his deal.
