Koeman Tests Dumfries‑Summerville Pair in Final Warm‑up
Ronald Koeman will field Denzel Dumfries alongside newcomer Crysencio Summerville in the Netherlands' final pre‑World Cup friendly against Uzbekistan. The match will be played without spectators. It serves as the last opportunity to fine‑tune the right flank before the tournament.
Koeman said before the game that Summerville can comfortably occupy the right‑wing role. He noted that the partnership requires coordination with Dumfries to decide when to stay wide and when to cut inside. Summerville, a West Ham United player, showed good moments but still has room for improvement.
Summerville made his debut as right winger in the loss to Algeria, with Mats Wieffer positioned behind him. Dumfries, who is on the verge of signing for Real Madrid, missed that match due to suspension and returns now. Koeman observed that Summerville's performance against Algeria showed he feels comfortable on the inside of the flank.
The squad spent a relaxed evening in Manhattan, dining away from the technical staff. Koeman joked that the players enjoyed a night without the national coach. Defender Micky van de Ven stressed the importance of such relaxation during a long tournament.
Koeman arranged two consecutive games against Uzbekistan: a standard 90‑minute fixture followed by a closed‑door reserve match. The reserve game will feature 35‑minute halves and will not admit media. The format aims to give minutes to players like Memphis Depay and Justin Kluivert, who are returning from injury. Koeman expects Uzbekistan to line up with a five‑defender system, mirroring group‑stage opponent Japan.
Before settling on Summerville, Koeman evaluated several options including Steven Bergwijn, Calvin Stengs, Jeremie Frimpong and Xavi Simons without success. An experiment with midfielder Teun Koopmeiners proved effective, creating space for Dumfries. Summerville adds speed to the counter‑attack alongside Malen and Cody Gakpo, enhancing the threat from the right.
