Kramer calls Weghorst a ‘small wallet’: respect meets skepticism

🇳🇱

Former Dutch striker Michiel Kramer publicly dismissed Wout Weghorst as a “small wallet” during his appearance on Saturday evening at De Oranjezomer, signalling a stark contrast between respect for the striker’s career and personal doubts about his image in the public eye.

Kramer emphasized that he respects Weghorst’s career, describing it as “very neat”. He clarified that he holds no personal grudge against the forward, a point he made clear during his Saturday evening appearance at De Oranjezomer. The former striker, who played for clubs such as Feyenoord, underscored his neutral stance.

Commentator Hugo Borst echoed the “small wallet” label, adding that it reflects Weghorst’s manner on and off the pitch. Borst recalled having faced Weghorst when he was still with FC Emmen, reinforcing his view of the striker’s style.

Kramer also mocked Weghorst’s pre‑match rituals, noting that the forward never reads the Bible before a game nor splashes water in catacombs. He suggested that much of Weghorst’s public persona feels “over‑made”, while admitting he does not know the player personally.

Regarding the farewell video released by Ajax, Kramer said the clip does not come across as sincere and that it sometimes irritates him. He conceded that Weghorst could be a “really good guy”, noting that a few players who know him echo his criticism.

The juxtaposition of respect for Weghorst’s achievements with Kramer’s doubts underscores a divided perception of the striker among Dutch football circles. This debate was featured in the newest VPs Willem&Wessel segment, which also touched on Oranje, Morocco and FC Barcelona narratives.
