Manchester City lands Enzo Maresca, Chelsea forced to rebuild
Enzo Maresca has been appointed as the new manager of Manchester City, signing a contract that runs until mid‑2029 after terminating his agreement with Chelsea in December 2023. The move includes an agreed transfer fee and a compensation payment to the London club.
Maresca returns to City for a third spell, having previously coached the Under‑23 side and served as Pep Guardiola's assistant during Guardiola's tenure. His familiarity with the club's philosophy was a key factor in the appointment.
Maresca expressed his enthusiasm in a statement posted on Manchester City's website. "This is a club I know well, so to work here is a great opportunity for me. I can't wait to start, I want to win, play good football and enjoy the pressure that coaching this club gives," he said.

Chelsea issued a statement minutes after the announcement, referring to Maresca as a 'former manager' and expressing disappointment. "Obviously we feel let down, because we were convinced that with his head and heart he was already at another club and another project, despite only being a year at Chelsea," the club said. Maresca resigned from Chelsea in December after indicating in the previous autumn that he might succeed Guardiola. His departure came after he had suggested the possibility of taking over the City role.Maresca leaves Chelsea mid-season for City: the third Etihad act begins
Both clubs reached an agreement on a transfer sum for Maresca, and the new City manager is required to pay a compensation fee to Chelsea. The financial terms were settled without public disclosure of the exact amount. For Manchester City, the appointment provides continuity and a manager versed in the club's style, aiming to maintain success. Chelsea, meanwhile, must replace Maresca, having already seen Liam Rosenior fail to impress and preparing Xabi Alonso to take charge next season.
