Niklas Süle leaves the pitch for amateur football’s ninth tier
In the quiet town of Tiefenbach, population 6,000, a former 49-time German international is preparing to swap the bright lights of the Bundesliga for the unvarnished reality of the Kreisliga Sinsheim.
Niklas Süle, who retired from professional football two months ago at the age of 30, will continue playing at the ninth level of German football next season. The defender has confirmed his move to SV Tiefenbach, a club based in the southeastern German municipality.
Süle’s decision to end his professional career came after a persistent injury. “I was looking forward to the time after football,” he told Sky Sport in early May. “Being independent, going on holiday, spending time with my children.” Yet the 30-year-old has chosen not to hang up his boots entirely.
SV Tiefenbach competes in the Kreisliga Sinsheim, the ninth tier of German football. The club’s home ground lies in a region where the landscape is marked by rolling hills and small villages. Süle, who has never played for Tiefenbach before and is not originally from the area, will join two of his closest friends at the club.
One of those friends is the team’s head coach. “Two of my best friends play for SV Tiefenbach,” Süle explained. “One of them is even the manager.” The 30-year-old defender lived near Tiefenbach during his time at Bayern München, strengthening the personal connection.
“I look forward enormously to experiencing football from a completely different perspective,” Süle said. “Where it’s purely about the sport itself, not the peripheral issues or money.”
In his professional career, Süle made 13 years of appearances across three clubs: TSG Hoffenheim, Bayern München and Borussia Dortmund. His international tally stands at 49 caps for Germany.
“After 13 years as a professional footballer, it’s an absolute gift for me to step onto the pitch again with my friends and fully enjoy this wonderful sport,” Süle concluded.
