Jupiler Pro League quality drops as top sides cruise to easy wins

🇧🇪

Club Brugge defeated AA Gent 5-0, Union SG beat Anderlecht 5-1, and STVV won 3-0 at KV Mechelen in the final matchday of the Jupiler Pro League season. The three teams had no stakes in the standings but delivered emphatic victories.

Club Brugge’s 5-0 win over AA Gent marked their largest margin of victory against Gent in 2024/25. Union SG’s 5-1 defeat of Anderlecht was their biggest league win against Anderlecht since November 2021. STVV’s 3-0 victory at KV Mechelen extended their unbeaten run against Mechelen to six league matches.

The season concluded with widespread criticism over inconsistent standards in the Jupiler Pro League. Club Brugge manager Ivan Leko stated that the league’s quality has declined and warned of further downward pressure on standards.

Leko emphasized that the league’s struggles are structural, not temporary, and called for urgent reforms to reverse the trend. He cited financial disparities and fixture congestion as key factors exacerbating the issue.

Anderlecht manager Felice Mazzù echoed concerns, pointing to the league’s increasing competitiveness at the bottom but stagnation at the top. He highlighted the risk of top talents leaving for stronger leagues.

The final standings confirmed Anderlecht in fourth, Club Brugge in fifth, Union SG in sixth, and STVV in ninth. All four clubs finished outside European qualification positions.

The upcoming season’s schedule will be announced next month, with clubs facing pressure to improve performance and retain talent amid growing financial constraints.
