Ajax to pursue 100% commitment for new starting goalkeeper
Ajax will seek a new first-choice goalkeeper next season with '100% commitment'. Club watcher Mike Verweij revealed the move. Verweij also defended keeper Diogo Costa Paes amid heavy criticism during his first half-season in Amsterdam.
The club’s search follows speculation over Paes’s long-term role. Verweij emphasized Ajax’s clear direction for the position.
Paes joined Ajax from Burnley in January 2024. He made 18 appearances in all competitions during the second half of the 2023-24 season.
Criticism of Paes peaked after errors in key matches. Verweij argued the pressure was unjustified given the defender’s overall contributions and young age.
Verweij suggested the new goalkeeper search would conclude before the summer transfer window. He highlighted Ajax’s proactive approach under sporting director Sven Mislintat.
