World Cup tour gives Barcelona director Deco a chance to track targets

🇪🇸

Barcelona sporting director Deco has flown to the United States to attend World Cup matches as the tournament moves into its knockout phase, giving the club’s football chief a front‑row seat to monitor players still competing and potential signings for Barcelona.

The trip coincides with the World Cup’s knockout stage, where several Barcelona players remain in action and a number of the club’s transfer targets are still featuring for their national sides. Deco will use the travel to watch these individuals live, rather than relying solely on broadcast analysis.

Among the players Deco plans to observe is Portugal right‑back Joao Cancelo, whose loan spell at Barcelona officially concluded on 30 June. Cancelo’s departure marks the end of his short‑term stint with the Catalan giants.

Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez, identified as one of Barcelona’s primary transfer objectives, will also be under Deco’s scrutiny during the tournament. Alvarez’s performances for Argentina and his club could influence the Blaugrana’s pursuit.

Spain’s national team, featuring eight Barcelona players, will be a focal point for the director, while Brazil’s squad will be monitored for winger Raphinha, who returned to training on Friday after a hamstring setback. Raphinha’s recovery adds another layer of interest for the club’s scouting network.

Defender Jules Kounde, a key figure for France, will attract Deco’s attention amid ongoing speculation about his future. His role in the French side’s campaign could affect Barcelona’s planning for the centre‑back position.

England’s matches will be watched for new Barcelona signing Anthony Gordon, whose tournament involvement has been limited up to the Round of 32. Gordon’s limited minutes provide a brief glimpse of his adaptation to international football.

The Portuguese national team, a particular interest for Deco given his own playing history, are slated to meet Spain in a Round of 16 clash, with Lamine Yamal, Pau Cubarsi, Pedri and Dani Olmo expected to start for La Roja. The fixture offers a direct comparison between Deco’s former nation and his current club’s Spanish contingent.

While the visit aligns with the World Cup, Deco’s primary aim is not scouting new talent, as Barcelona’s recruitment department has already completed extensive monitoring this season. Instead, he intends to deepen relationships with coaches, club officials and players, ensuring Barcelona remains visible at one of football’s biggest events.
