Southampton excluded from promotion playoffs after spying scandal

🇬🇧

Southampton have been removed from the promotion playoffs after the English Football League ruled they had spied on Middlesbrough. The decision was announced on Tuesday following a hearing.

The alleged espionage took place ahead of the first leg of the playoff semi‑final between Southampton and Middlesbrough. The club is accused of gathering information on the opposition’s preparations.

The English Football League convened a hearing to examine the allegations. After reviewing the evidence, the league concluded that Southampton had breached the competition rules.

As a result, Southampton are barred from taking part in the remainder of the promotion playoffs. Their exclusion removes any chance of reaching the Premier League this season.

Middlesbrough, the team that was the target of the spying, remain in the playoff competition. Their semi‑final tie will continue without Southampton’s participation.

The ruling underscores the EFL’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of the playoff process. The league’s decision was made on Tuesday and is final unless further action is taken.
