Coventry fans recall opening-day wins and shocks from 1981 to 2021

🇬🇧 2 uur geleden

Coventry City supporters have shared vivid opening-day memories spanning four decades, from thrilling victories to crushing defeats.

Neil recalled beating Arsenal 3-0 away in the 1993-94 season opener with a Mick Quinn hat-trick, calling it a "great away day." He also cited consecutive opening-day wins against Chelsea in 1997 (3-2) and 1998 (2-1), where Dion Dublin and Darren Huckerby were instrumental. The worst memory came in a 3-0 home loss to Nottingham Forest, which shattered early-season optimism.

Mike described August 2021 as historic when fans returned after Covid-19 exile. He highlighted a last-minute Kyle McFadzean winner against Nottingham Forest in his first game as a season ticket-holder in 20 years.

Martin revisited the 1987-88 season opener, a replay of the 1987 FA Cup final against Tottenham Hotspur. David Speedie scored on his debut, while Gary Mabbutt faced chants of "There's only one Gary Mabbutt!" after an own goal. Coventry won 2-1, with Mabbutt scoring a consolation.

Richard remembered Dion Dublin’s hat-trick against Chelsea, including a late winner to make it 3-2. He noted Dublin, Huckerby, and Gary McAllister were at their peak during that period.

David shared his 1981-82 season ticket purchase story. After moving away from Coventry as a child, he bought a ticket while studying at Aston University. An administrative error initially assigned him a non-existent seat at Highfield Road, but he was relocated and witnessed a 1-0 win over Manchester United.
