Sardar Azmoun Excluded from Iran World Cup Squad
Sardar Azmoun, Iran's second‑all‑time scorer, was omitted from the national team’s preliminary World Cup squad. The decision was announced on Saturday by coach Amir Ghalenoei. Azmoun posted an emotional message on social media expressing his love for Iran and wishing the team success.
The message highlighted Azmoun’s personal connection to the country and his disappointment at not being selected. He wrote that he will continue to support the team from afar.
Iran is set to compete in the upcoming World Cup without Azmoun. The tournament will take place later this year, and the squad will travel without the striker.
Azmoun’s career includes being the second highest goal scorer in Iran’s history. He has featured for clubs such as FC Zenit St Petersburg and Bayer Leverkusen, scoring numerous international goals.
Coach Amir Ghalenoei explained that the preliminary list was based on current form and tactical needs. The final squad will be announced after further assessments.
The exclusion sparked discussion among fans and pundits, many expressing support for Azmoun’s professionalism. Others debated the impact of his absence on Iran’s attacking options.
Looking ahead, Azmoun remains eligible for future call‑ups should his performances merit inclusion. The Iranian side will aim to advance beyond the group stage at the World Cup.
