Gillingham sign defender Liam Gordon after Motherwell exit
Gillingham have secured central defender Liam Gordon on a free transfer after his contract with Scottish Premiership side Motherwell expired at the end of the 2025‑26 season. The 30‑year‑old arrives at the League Two club in June 2026, completing the deal before the transfer window closes.
Gordon featured 57 times for Motherwell across two seasons and contributed two goals from defence. His experience in the Scottish top flight adds depth to Gillingham’s back line.
He becomes the club’s fourth summer acquisition, following the signings of James Brophy, Zane Albarus and Will Goodwin. The quartet of new players reflects a busy recruitment period for the Kent side.
Technical director Richard Dobson had announced a week earlier that Gillingham were targeting six additional signings before the window shut. Dobson’s statement underscored the club’s ambition to overhaul the squad.
Before joining Motherwell, Gordon spent a lengthy spell at St Johnstone, where he amassed 201 appearances in all competitions. The former St Johnstone stalwart brings a wealth of Scottish league experience.
"When Gillingham came knocking it was a move that really interested me. I am delighted to be here," Gordon told the club’s website after finalising his contract. His comments highlight enthusiasm for the new challenge.
All six deals were concluded in June 2026, marking a decisive period of activity for the League Two outfit. The completed transfers set the stage for Gillingham’s upcoming campaign.
