Athletic Bilbao Ends Season Mid-Table After Missing Europe
Athletic Bilbao will finish the La Liga campaign in mid-table after failing to secure a European spot, a goal set at the start of the season. The club’s season has been described as difficult by its officials.
The team entered the campaign aiming for a Europa League place but fell short, lacking the points required to climb higher in the standings. Their league form was inconsistent, leaving the club dissatisfied with its position.
In the Champions League, Athletic reached the final matchday of the group stage, delivering a reasonable performance overall. The European run was considered fairly satisfactory given the squad’s resources.
The club also reached the Copa del Rey semi-finals, where they were outplayed in both legs by Real Madrid. The defeat highlighted the gap between Athletic and the league’s elite.
“It has been a hard year, the results are not what we wanted in the league,” the club’s representative said. “La Liga tells you where you stand and we don’t like where we are; we lack the points we wanted, it has been difficult."
“The trajectory in Champions has been quite reasonable and in the Cup we reached the semi-finals but at a bad moment,” he added. The comments underline both the positives and the timing issues that hampered the season.
Looking ahead, Athletic Bilbao will aim to improve its league consistency and return to European competition. The club expects to strengthen the squad and address the shortcomings that cost them points this year.
