DFB evaluates 2038 or 2042 World Cup bid plans
The German Football Association (DFB) opened internal discussions on a potential World Cup bid for 2038 or 2042. The DFL presidium was consulted for the first time.
DFB President Bernd Neuendorf confirmed the exploratory phase during a meeting with DFL officials. The federation is analyzing feasibility for both calendar slots.
A final decision on whether to submit a formal bid is expected by mid-2025. The DFB’s executive board will review economic and logistical aspects before committing.
Germany last hosted the World Cup in 2006. The DFB previously expressed interest in co-hosting the 2030 edition with Morocco and Spain.
The 2038 slot remains unassigned following FIFA’s rotation policy. The 2042 bid window closes in 2026.
Neuendorf stated that hosting rights would require full alignment with DFL and Bundesliga clubs to minimize disruption.
