🇮🇹 2 uur geleden

Former Italian striker Igor Protti has died at 58, his family announced on Instagram, sharing his final message that likened his life to a match reaching the final whistle, while recalling his career of 48 goals in 144 Serie A appearances.

The family posted on Protti's official Instagram page: “With immense sorrow, the family announces that Igor passed away during the night.” The statement confirmed the news and expressed their grief.

In accordance with Protti’s wishes, the family also released his farewell message: “This wonderful journey, like every match, has reached the final whistle… I also want to thank all the people who cared for me and stood by my side, and all the supporters of the teams I played for.” The quote reflects his gratitude toward family and fans.

Protti revealed in July 2025 that he had been diagnosed with cancer, and by September the disease had spread to his vertebrae. The diagnosis marked a difficult period in his final years.

At the end of last month, Protti walked his daughter down the aisle on her wedding day, sharing a personal milestone shortly before his passing. The family highlighted this moment in their tribute.

During his career, Protti played as a striker for Livorno, Messina, Bari, Napoli and Lazio, among others. His time at those clubs cemented his reputation in Italian football.

Alongside Dario Hubner, Protti is one of only two players to become Capocannoniere in Serie A, Serie B and Serie C. He also remains the sole player to finish as Serie A top scorer while his team, Bari, was relegated in the same season.

Overall, Protti scored 48 goals in 144 Serie A matches, a record that underscores his striking prowess. His goal tally places him among the notable forwards of his era.

A 2010 photograph shows Protti greeting fans during a Serie A match between Livorno and Napoli at Stadio Armando Picchi, captured by photographer Gabriele Maltinti. The image illustrates his connection with supporters during his playing days.
