Ronald Koeman targets World Cup success with Netherlands

🇳🇱 1 uur geleden
Ronald Koeman has been named head coach of the Netherlands national team ahead of the upcoming FIFA World Cup. Speaking in Barcelona, he expressed enthusiasm for the challenge, stating, "I am really looking forward to it." Koeman emphasized the importance of creating a positive atmosphere within the squad and around the team. "That’s sometimes missing in the Netherlands. We are too negative," he noted. His comments came during the preparation phase in Zeist, where training begins on Monday at the Club de Golf Barcelona resort, a location familiar to Koeman from his annual Koeman Cup event. Under Koeman’s leadership, the Netherlands reached the Nations League final in 2019 and the European Championship semifinals two years ago. While acknowledging these achievements, he dismissed the notion that his approach is purely pragmatic or risk-averse. "People can say what they want, but it’s a label," he responded. "Some coaches are labeled as always playing attacking football, yet I still prioritize ball possession and pressing when the moment is right." Koeman pushed back against criticisms of his tactical style, highlighting his extensive coaching career. "I am Ronald Koeman, I am the head coach, and I have managed the biggest clubs," he declared. He referenced the 1988 European Championship, where he played as a libero under Rinus Michels, as an example of a successful, less attacking approach. That tournament remains the only major title for the Netherlands. The current squad faces challenges with key players recovering from injuries, including Memphis Depay and Jurriën Timber. Despite these setbacks, Koeman remains optimistic, asserting, "We have a good team that can win against anyone." He stressed the need for players to accept their roles, especially in a tournament setting where harmony and teamwork are critical. The Netherlands head coach will announce the World Cup squad on Wednesday, framing it as a puzzle of the best possible team, even if not every player is at their peak. "We will be together for a long time, sitting close to each other every day," Koeman said. "Players must accept their roles, remain energetic even when not playing, and avoid draining the team’s energy." Koeman also highlighted the demanding nature of tournament football, requiring resilience and character. He drew a comparison with South American players, noting their often greater determination. "The strongest will survive," he remarked, reflecting on the physical and mental demands of the World Cup. With over 25 years of coaching experience, Koeman aims to showcase the best version of both the team and himself at the World Cup. He expressed a desire to challenge and move beyond lingering perceptions of his tactical approach.
