Lamine Yamal says he will shift from wing to central role

Barcelona’s 18‑year‑old winger Lamine Yamal told SPORT that, while he still excels on the flank, he envisions moving into central areas as opponents increasingly double‑team him, believing space in the middle will suit his decision‑making. He added that his role on the wing remains vital for Barcelona’s current tactics.

When asked whether he could play until the age of 40 like Lionel Messi, Yamal replied, “Do I see myself playing until the age of 40 like Messi? Impossible. Maybe I’ll still be playing, but to be at that level? That’s very, very difficult. You also need a huge desire to keep going. For me, he’s the best, and he continues to prove it even at 40 years old.” He noted that maintaining such a level would require extraordinary desire.

Yamal explained, “I think Messi also had three players marking him on the wing. The only place where they can’t really do that is in central areas because there’s much more space and movement.” He added, “Over time, I’ll move there because on the wing it’s easier for teams to defend against you with three players, while in the middle that’s much harder.”

Addressing doubts about himself, he said, “Have I ever had doubts about myself? No. I actually see myself as much better than people see me. I know the road is still long and that I have many things to improve.” He emphasized, “I’m only 18 years old,” and that a long development path lies ahead.

Yamal also mentioned that players such as Erling Haaland, Kylian Mbappe and Michael Olise are counted among the world’s best, and that they all strive to become the best versions of themselves. Their ambition, he said, mirrors his own drive to improve.

For now, Yamal acknowledges his position on the wing is essential for Barcelona’s tactics, but he expects that as he grows physically and tactically the club may eventually use him closer to goal in central positions.
