Lille target wing revival with 21‑year‑old Başar Önal
Lille have agreed personal terms with 21‑year‑old winger Başar Önal, the Dutch‑born Turkish youth international currently playing for NEC Nijmegen. Önal’s breakthrough last season saw him feature in 34 matches, net nine goals and provide nine assists, a contribution that helped NEC reach the KNVB Cup final.
He featured prominently in NEC’s cup run, culminating in the final where they were defeated 5‑1 by AZ Alkmaar. His displays prompted interest from Lille, who are seeking to address their wing deficiencies.
Lille struggled on the flanks during the early part of the new year, a period marked by a poor run of form. Mid‑season signings Gaëtan Perrin and Noah Edjouma have yet to make a significant impact.
The club is also linked with a possible big‑money acquisition of Matias Fernandez‑Pardo to reinforce the attack. His rumored move underscores Lille’s broader intent to revamp their forward line this summer.
NEC are reportedly holding out for around €7 million for Önal’s transfer. Negotiations are ongoing between the Dutch side and Lille, known as Les Dogues.
If the deal closes, Önal could provide the pace and creativity Lille lacked on the wings last season. The agreement was reported by Fabrice Hawkins, with Nick Hartland confirming the details.
