Roberto Martinez criticised keeping Ronaldo on vs DR Congo

🇧🇪 1 uur geleden

Portugal's 1-1 draw with the Democratic Republic of Congo at the World Cup left coach Roberto Martinez under fire for refusing to replace Cristiano Ronaldo, who remained on the pitch despite a quiet performance and a ten‑match streak without a goal in major international tournaments.

At the 83rd minute, Gonçalo Ramos was introduced, yet the substitution saw Vitinha leave the field instead of Cristiano Ronaldo. The majority of observers had expected Ronaldo to be withdrawn.

Former England international Chris Sutton described the situation on the BBC, stating: "It's embarrassing for Roberto Martinez. Are we all watching another match? He's afraid to take Ronaldo off." Sutton's remarks underscored the growing frustration with Martinez's decision‑making.

Cristiano Ronaldo has amassed 229 international caps and scored 143 goals for Portugal.

Sutton added that Ronaldo's role has shifted, saying: "Before, he was the creator, now he's the finisher. But not only: he controls everything." The comment reflects a perception that the team revolves around Ronaldo's presence.

Former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney argued that Portugal needs more energy, movement, and players operating in front of Ronaldo, labeling the performance as simply mediocre. Rooney's critique echoed calls for a more dynamic approach beyond relying on Ronaldo.

Roberto Martinez previously faced accusations of excessive loyalty to star players while managing the Belgium national team, the Diables Rouges. Supporters noted a similar pattern of protecting established names despite tactical concerns.

Martinez's contract is reported to be nearing its end, and his future has been linked to Al-Nassr, the club where Cristiano Ronaldo currently plays. The parallel prominence of both coach and striker at Al-Nassr raises questions about forthcoming decisions.

The lingering question is whether Roberto Martinez will finally make the decisive change when required.
