UPN files complaint over Athletic's new kit map
The Unión del Pueblo Navarro (UPN) filed a complaint with the Spanish Football Federation’s Competition Committee regarding Athletic Club’s new home jersey. The kit features a map of Euskal Herria including Navarra, alongside an ikurriña flag. Athletic Club debuted the kit on Saturday against Real Madrid.
UPN argues the map violates regulations by depicting political symbols on playing attire. The federation’s committee will review the complaint under competition rules. Athletic Club has not publicly responded to the complaint.
The new home jersey replaces last season’s design and marks the club’s first kit release for the upcoming campaign. Athletic Club’s kit launch event in Bilbao drew significant attention, with the map and flag sparking immediate debate. The club’s kit supplier, Adidas, confirmed the design’s official status.
Navarra is an autonomous community in Spain and not part of the Basque Country under Spanish law. The ikurriña is the official flag of the Basque Country. Athletic Club traditionally incorporates Basque symbols into its kits.
The federation’s decision on the complaint is pending, with no timeline provided. Athletic Club’s next match, away to Real Sociedad, is scheduled for August 18. The kit controversy adds pressure ahead of the new La Liga season.
