Josuha Guilavogui retires after 35 years
Josuha Guilavogui has ended his professional football career at the age of 35. The defensive midfielder last played for Leeds United in England.
Guilavogui, who previously competed in the German Bundesliga, announced his retirement following a long career spanning multiple leagues. The French international joined Leeds United in 2022 after earlier stints in his homeland and Germany.
During his time in the Bundesliga, he made 121 appearances for VfL Wolfsburg, where he also served as club captain. His leadership and defensive contributions were noted during his tenure from 2017 to 2022. Wolfsburg confirmed the retirement without further details.
The player’s career also included spells at AS Monaco in Ligue 1, Atlético Madrid in La Liga, and Bordeaux in France. His most recent club experience was cut short by limited playing time, leading to his departure from Leeds United in the summer of 2024.
Guilavogui represented France at the international level, earning 12 caps between 2013 and 2017. His debut came under manager Didier Deschamps, though he did not feature in major tournaments for the national team.
Having begun his professional journey with Bordeaux in 2009, Guilavogui accumulated over 400 senior appearances across clubs in France, Spain, Germany, and England. His retirement marks the conclusion of a two-decade career in top-flight football.
No immediate plans have been disclosed regarding his future beyond playing. Wolfsburg’s statement did not indicate any coaching or technical roles for the club.
