Algérie eyes Walter Mazzarri as frontrunner for Verts coach role
Algérie’s football federation (FAF) is already negotiating a new boss just weeks after Petkovic’s departure, and a fresh Italian option has emerged. According to AL24news, 64‑year‑old Walter Mazzarri is edging toward an agreement to take charge of the Verts, the Algerian national side.
Following Petkovic’s exit, the Fédération algérienne de football (FAF) confirmed it is still in talks to appoint a successor for the national team. The latest report points to an Italian candidate as the most promising lead.
Mazzarri’s credentials put him ahead
AL24news says Walter Mazzarri is now in a strong position in the race for the Verts job, with the FAF reportedly close to sealing a deal. The 64‑year‑old Italian brings a solid résumé from top‑level European football.
Mazzarri has managed Naples, Inter Milan, Fiorentina and Watford, and his spell at Naples stands out with a Coppa Italia triumph in 2012 and a second‑place Serie A finish in 2013. Those achievements underline his experience at the highest tier.
Other candidates lose ground
Algerian media report that the Stefano Pioli option has drifted away, while Tiago Pinto’s candidacy is stalled by disagreements over his proposed staff composition.
No definitive agreement has been announced by the FAF yet, and further discussions are expected to confirm whether the former Naples coach will indeed sit on the Algerian bench.
