Endless road: Zeph Thomas' 39 moves across five nations

Zeph Thomas says, "If I I didn't get the money I thought I deserved, I'd be off," as he reflects on a career that has taken him to 29 different clubs in 39 moves over 18 years since his release by Rotherham United in 2008. The Bradford-born winger, now 36, has become one of football's most prolific journeymen.

Thomas began his senior path at Rotherham United, where former Manchester United forward Mark Robins was youth team coach. He was released in 2008 without making a first‑team appearance, later describing himself as "a bit petulant and naive" at the time.

His club list reads like a travel itinerary: Rossington Main (five spells), Mickleover Sports (four spells), Frickley Athletic (three spells), Garden City Broncbusters in the United States, Montegnee in Belgium and Thunder Bay Chill in Canada. Additional stops include Cowdenbeath, Boston United, Harrogate Town, Scarborough Athletic, Stafford Rangers and Leek Town, among many others.

The 2013‑14 season saw Thomas on the books of Sheffield, Mickleover Sports, Scarborough Athletic, Matlock Town and Goole, while 2016‑17 featured a return to Mickleover Sports followed by spells at Shaw Lane, Stafford Rangers and Frickley Athletic before ending the year back at Mickleover. His longest continuous spell was at Brighouse Town (second stint) from 2020 to 2023.

While at Stocksbridge Park Steels, Thomas faced future Premier League champion Jamie Vardy, then playing for Halifax Town. A groin injury in 2013 almost forced him to quit; he worked in a Rotherham call centre and considered joining the army before a chance at Thunder Bay Chill revived his playing career.

In 2024 Thomas embraced a player‑manager role at ninth‑tier South Yorkshire side Dearne & District. The club, champions of the Northern Counties East League First Division last season, will play its first FA Cup match on Saturday against Runcorn Town, a milestone Thomas describes as "massive for the area because they have never seen this team play in the competition."

Thomas also serves as lead coach of Derby County Under‑12s, guiding them to the Orange Veins Madrid tournament title in 2025. He lives a five‑minute walk from Dearne & District’s ground with his wife Marie and their children, Jerome (11) and Lucia (7), and combines his part‑time job with coaching duties.

Reflecting on his peripatetic past, Thomas admits, "Sometimes I feel a bit of a hypocrite because I used to move clubs for extra money. Now I say to my players, 'keep on doing what you're doing because the money will come'."
