Madagascar clinches opening Afrobasket U18 win over Gabon

Madagascar secured the opening victory of the Afrobasket U18 tournament with a last‑second three‑point shot, edging Gabon and giving the Grande Île an early advantage in the competition. The win, captured in a photo by FIBA, places Madagascar atop the group standings and sets the tone for the upcoming phase.

Madagascar imposed its initiative from the first minutes, finishing the opening quarter ahead 19‑17 after a brief exchange of baskets. The early lead reflected the team's aggressive start and efficient shooting.

Gabon answered strongly, narrowing the gap and eventually taking the lead in the second quarter. Daryll Mbiguis and Ray Biyamba posted the highest efficiency scores for the Central African side, propelling Gabon to a 37‑27 halftime advantage.

Les Barea emerged from the break with renewed vigor, applying high pressure, improving shot selection and tightening their defence. Their effort paid off as Madagascar reclaimed the edge, closing the third quarter with a cumulative 51‑48 lead.

The final quarter turned into a seesaw battle, with Gabon erasing the deficit, retaking the lead and then forcing a 65‑65 deadlock with only seconds remaining. Madagascar regained possession for the decisive play.

Just before the buzzer at the Palais des Sports de Treichville, Abdoul Yvan Hanaffi released a well‑aimed three‑point shot from the perimeter. The ball swished cleanly through the net, sealing the victory for Madagascar in dramatic fashion.

Madagascar now launches its campaign against Morocco on Friday, while Gabon will look to bounce back when it meets Mali in its next match. Both teams aim to recover points as the group stage progresses.
