Mundial Tim Payne's fairy‑tale debut sparks viral goal for Olimpia

New Zealand international Tim Payne made a memorable debut for Club Olimpia of Paraguay in the 2026 Torneo Clausura, coming off the bench to score a spectacular strike that quickly went viral. The World Cup‑experienced defender entered the match against Rubio Ñu with the score already 4‑0 and added a fairy‑tale finish before the final whistle.

Payne was introduced in the 69th minute, replacing Raúl Cáceres and wearing the number 4 shirt. He arrived alongside captain Richard Ortiz, who took the place of Álex Franco as the team pressed for a final goal.

The build‑up began with Payne recovering the ball in his own half before the right‑back surged forward, delivering a pass down the right flank to Franco Alfonso. Alfonso then cut the ball back across the box, setting up the decisive move.

Receiving the diagonal pass, Payne struck a right‑footed shot that brushed Brian Blasi and left goalkeeper Carlos Servín with no chance, the ball nesting in the top corner to complete the 5‑0 rout.

Tigo Sports commentator described the moment as “a fairy‑tale”, echoing the excitement that surrounded the New Zealand player’s performance.

The victory featured earlier goals from Braian Romero, Eduardo Delmás, Bernardo Romeo Benítez and Fernando Cardozo, with the latter scoring the fourth at the 71st minute. The home side also saw Cristian Núñez sent off after a second yellow, reducing the visitors to ten men.

It marked Olimpia’s first win of the 2026 Clausura after defeats in the opening two rounds against Libertad and Nacional, allowing the club to regain ground in the league table ahead of upcoming fixtures versus 2 de Mayo and Sportivo Aureliano.

Off the pitch, Payne’s goal amplified a social‑media surge that saw his Instagram followers jump from 4 000 to over five million following a pre‑World Cup campaign by Argentine influencer Valentín Scarsini. After three World Cup 2026 appearances for New Zealand, Payne left Wellington Phoenix and accepted Olimpia’s offer, receiving a warm ovation with New Zealand flags in the Defensores del Chaco stadium.

Olimpia now turns its attention to the Copa Sudamericana round of 16, where the Decano will face Vasco da Gama.
