Senegal eyes Patrick Vieira as coach after early World Cup exit

In Dakar’s bustling football district, the Senegal federation has signalled its intent to appoint former Arsenal and Juventus midfielder Patrick Vieira as the next national team coach, a move prompted by the early World Cup exit that saw the Lions of Teranga bow out in the round of 16.

De voetbalbond van het Afrikaanse land heeft al aangeklopt bij de voormalig topmiddenvelder, meldt de doorgaans betrouwbare transferjournalist Fabrizio Romano. Vieira, the former midfield star, is now in the federation’s shortlist.

According to Romano, discussions between the two parties have already begun, but they remain in an early stage. No agreement has been reached yet.

Ook Foot Mercato meldde al dat Vieira één van de belangrijkste kandidaten is voor het bondscoachschap. The outlet highlighted his experience as a key factor.

Senegal is seeking a new coach after Thiaw was dismissed following the WK 2026 elimination, where the team fell to Belgium in the round of 16. Thiaw had only months earlier lifted the Afrika Cup, a triumph that raised expectations.

Vieira, born in Dakar, enjoyed an illustrious playing career, becoming world champion in 1998 and winning the EK in 2000. He was celebrated for his leadership and tactical intelligence on the field.

At club level he featured for Arsenal, Juventus, Internazionale and Manchester City, among others. He was known for his physical presence and commanding midfield play.

His managerial résumé includes spells at New York City FC, OGC Nice, Crystal Palace, RC Strasbourg and Genoa. Each stint added to his reputation as a modern, adaptable coach.
