Uganda reels after murder of ex‑star David Owori, demands action

David Owori, 27, was attacked near his home in Makindye, a suburb of Kampala, on Tuesday evening when he refused to hand over his smartphone. Attackers battered him with street stones, leaving him unconscious, and he died a day later in hospital from severe neck and abdomen injuries. The murder has thrown Oeganda into unrest, with the public demanding a hard crackdown on crime.

Owori was a former Oegandese international and captain of SC Villa, the country’s most successful club with seventeen league titles. He was regarded as a "Google-favorietOwori" and a leading figure in the domestic league, especially during the club’s 2024 title season. His career also included spells in Europe with Vélez in Spain and Utsiktens BK in Sweden.

According to police, the assault occurred on Tuesday evening near Owori’s residence in Makindye. The group of thieves targeted his smartphone, prompting the violent confrontation. The police report confirmed that the motive was the theft of the device.

Witnesses said Owori tried to defend himself but was overpowered by the stone‑throwing assailants. After the attack, the perpetrators fled with his belongings while he remained unconscious. He was taken to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries the following day.

“David was not just a footballer. He was a leader and an inspiration for an entire generation,” the Oegandese football federation wrote. “Courage, humility and passion were his values as captain of SC Villa, and in the national team shirt he carried the hope of a nation.”

The Oegandese parliament observed a minute of silence in his memory. Citizens expressed alarm over the government’s inability to curb rising and increasingly brutal crime, demanding tougher measures and a stricter approach to offenders.

Owori is the second well‑known athlete to die violently this year; in early June rugby player Sydney Gongodyo, also 27, was killed after being attacked by a large crowd. The back‑to‑back tragedies have heightened public anxiety.

Teammates gathered on Thursday for an emotional farewell, and crowds assembled to mourn the loss of the beloved star. Glenn Van SnickSportjournalist at HLN7 reported that the nation united in grief, underscoring the deep impact of Owori’s death on Oegandese society.
