De Boer’s verdict: Oranje’s flaws exposed in comfortable win
Dutch national team head coach Ronald Koeman and his starting XI received mixed reviews from analyst Ronald de Boer after Oranje’s comfortable victory over Tunisia in their latest World Cup fixture.
Jan Paul van Hecke and Brian Brobbey earned the highest grades of seven from De Boer, who assessed every player who featured for at least 30 minutes. Teun Koopmeiners, Justin Kluivert, Crysencio Summerville, Memphis Depay and Noa Lang were excluded from the ratings due to insufficient playing time.
Goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen received a 6.5, with De Boer noting the young custodian could not be blamed for Tunisia’s goal but performed his core duties reliably. Verbruggen’s composure under pressure was highlighted as a positive, despite limited involvement in the match.
Nathan Aké and Xavi Simons were both praised for their composed displays, with Aké described as error-free and Simons noted for his intelligent positioning and control in midfield. De Boer emphasised the need for Oranje to target the second post more frequently, where Matthijs de Ligt and Jeremie Frimpong often positioned themselves.

Van Hecke’s risk-taking in build-up play was commended, though De Boer criticised his positioning during Tunisia’s goal. Virgil van Dijk was singled out for his vulnerability in defence, particularly in transition moments, with De Boer urging the captain to improve his leadership in those phases. Ryan Gravenberch and Frenkie de Jong were both described as solid performers, with De Boer praising their intent and aggression in the first half. However, he noted a drop-off in intensity after the initial period, calling for greater consistency throughout the match. Xander Malen’s performance was deemed satisfactory but ultimately unremarkable, with De Boer suggesting the forward’s struggles in the final third may stem from overthinking, referencing his missed chance against Algeria earlier in the tournament.Netherlands' full squad trains a day after World Cup win over Tunisia
Gakpo’s industry was acknowledged, but De Boer criticised his decision-making in possession, urging the winger to accelerate his actions and prioritise delivering crosses to the second post. The need for quicker decision-making was framed as a key area for improvement. De Boer reserved his sharpest criticism for Oranje’s transitional vulnerabilities, describing moments of sloppy ball loss and inconsistent aggression. He acknowledged Koeman’s post-match analysis as accurate, but stressed that the team must eliminate these flaws before facing tougher opponents in the knockout stages.
