England Favoured but Brazil and Mexico Threaten 2026 World Cup

The 2026 FIFA World Cup begins Thursday across the United States, Canada and Mexico. The expanded 48‑team format pits England, Brazil and Mexico among the favourites. France, Spain and Argentina also enter as strong contenders. England are rated third favourite by bookmakers but face a historic challenge. Manager Thomas Tuchel’s squad selection has drawn little enthusiasm, and veteran Jordan Henderson is unlikely to add a World Cup winner to his résumé. England’s only previous triumph came on home soil 60 years ago, and any route to the final now crosses several talented nations. Brazil, five‑time champions who last lifted the trophy in 2002, could be dangerous under Carlo Ancelotti. The former Real Madrid manager has steadied a side that is defensively solid, midfield‑experienced and equipped with an array of attacking talent. Brazil’s record in Americas‑hosted tournaments adds to their threat. Mexico, guided by Javier Aguirre, draws South Africa, South Korea and Czechia in Group A. The team arrives unbeaten from its last eight internationals, including draws with Portugal and Belgium, and hopes home advantage will echo its 1970 and 1986 quarter‑final runs. Their defensive foundation and several dangerous attackers make them a potential surprise. Other contenders include Germany, Curacao, France, Spain, Argentina, Portugal and Belgium. A side note notes Lamine Yamal’s update ahead of the opener and Neville’s backing of Kane to become England’s and the Premier League’s greatest scorer.
