Hearts sell Michael Steinwender to Bochum
Hearts have transferred defender Michael Steinwender to VfL Bochum, a German second‑tier side, for an undisclosed fee. The 26‑year‑old Austrian, who signed a contract until summer 2028 with Hearts after joining from Värnamo in January 2023, leaves Tynecastle after 47 appearances and two goals.
Steinwender featured in 34 league matches for Hearts last season, starting 31 of them. Over his two‑year spell he made 47 appearances and scored two goals.
He signed a new deal with VfL Bochum that runs until the summer of 2029. The Austrian began his professional career with Mattersburg before moving to St Polten and Hartberg.
Speaking to the club’s website, Michael Steinwender said, “I am overjoyed to have the chance to prove myself here in Germany in Bundesliga 2. VfL really pursued me and gave me a great feeling right from the start.” He highlighted that VfL’s pursuit gave him a great feeling from the start.
Director of professional football Simon Zoller added, “Michael won us over with his all‑round package as a modern centre‑back.” Bochum finished ninth in the 18‑team German second tier last season.
The defender leaves Tynecastle after his contract with Hearts was set to run until summer 2028. His move gives Bochum a central‑defence option for the coming campaign.
