Jose Mourinho to add Pepe to Real Madrid staff

Florentino Perez was re‑elected as Real Madrid president on Sunday with 65% of the vote, confirming Jose Mourinho as the club’s new manager. Mourinho will add former defender Pepe to his coaching staff. The appointment hinged on Perez defeating Enrique Riquelme in the election, which he did with 65% support. Mourinho had been preparing for a possible return during the final weeks of the campaign. Mourinho plans to bring Ibrahima Konate and Denzel Dumfries into the Real Madrid squad for next season and will import several staff members from Benfica. Pepe, 43, retired in 2024 after a decade at Real Madrid, including three years under Mourinho, and will take his first coaching step. Alvaro Arbeloa was considered but ruled out. Ramon Alvarez de Mon reported the Pepe appointment. Official confirmation of Mourinho’s return is expected within days. Images credit Sebastian Widmann and Angel Martinez.
