Josko Gvardiol set to sign new Manchester City contract

Manchester City defender Josko Gvardiol is set to sign a new contract and remain at the club beyond 2028. The 24-year-old Croatian has been linked with Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Real Madrid this summer. City director of football Hugo Viana confirmed the club’s determination to keep Gvardiol despite Pep Guardiola’s departure. A long-term renewal offer is already on the table, with contract talks progressing well. Croatian outlet Sportske Novosti reported Gvardiol remains open to a new challenge but is settled in Manchester and at City. The defender’s future has been a major summer transfer talking point. According to Sam Lee of The Athletic, Gvardiol will likely extend his stay due to his comfort in the city and at the Etihad Stadium. Incoming manager Enzo Maresca has made the defender’s role central to his 2026-27 defensive plans. Gvardiol broke his silence last week, stating he was happy at City and would assess his situation after the FIFA World Cup with Croatia. The latest update suggests his assessment has favored the club. City had tabled a lucrative offer earlier this year to make Gvardiol one of the highest-paid players at the Etihad. Ruben Dias is also understood to be staying, preserving City’s defensive core under Maresca.
