Michael Owen Explains Liverpool’s Decision to Sack Arne Slot

Michael Owen says Liverpool dismissed Arne Slot and installed Andoni Iraola as manager. He also notes that Sipke Hulshoff, Ruben Peeters and Giovanni van Bronckhorst have left the club. Owen explains that toward the end of the season fans’ unrest was palpable at Anfield. He adds that he initially believed Liverpool would give Slot more time for the next season. Slot earned the Premier League title in his first season after replacing Jurgen Klopp. In his second season Liverpool finished fifth, recorded 12 league defeats and suffered 20 losses across all competitions. Owen suggests the board sensed the fan mood and that this influenced the decision to change. He mentions a big transfer window over last summer that strengthened striker positions but injuries prevented the expected progress. With Mohamed Salah gone, Owen says Liverpool cannot replace him like for like. He recommends targeting Jarrod Bowen at West Ham for the right‑hand side, adding that a top centre‑back and midfield depth are also required. Owen concludes that the summer’s priority is clarity as Iraola inherits a squad needing attacking reinvention, defensive authority and midfield cover.
