Rio Ngumoha Leaves England Camp After Man‑of‑the‑Match

Rio Ngumoha will leave the England camp this week after a major impression on Thomas Tuchel and his teammates. The 17‑year‑old was named man‑of‑the‑match in his senior debut as a second‑half substitute in England’s 1‑0 World Cup warm‑up win over New Zealand. Ngumoha is not listed in England’s 26‑man World Cup squad. He was one of five supplementary England players taken to the pre‑tournament camp in Florida. England’s final pre‑tournament friendly is against Costa Rica on Wednesday. The squad will be bolstered by Arsenal quartet Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, Eberechi Eze and Noni Madueke, who arrived after the Champions League final. The main squad travels to Kansas City, Missouri on Saturday for a behind‑closed‑doors training game against Miami United. Ngumoha will go on holiday before returning to the United States next month for Liverpool’s pre‑season tour. Ngumoha became Liverpool’s youngest scorer at 16 when he netted the decisive goal in a 3‑2 win over Newcastle. He made ten senior starts last season across the Premier League and Champions League. Limited game time under former Liverpool manager Arne Slot sparked reported dissatisfaction. European clubs, including Bayern Munich, have shown interest, but Liverpool insist they will not sell him this summer. The potential for more playing time may increase with the departure of Mohamed Salah. New Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola, who succeeded Slot, relies on young talents such as Eli Junior Kroupi, Rayan and Dean Hujisen. Ngumoha remains confident of linking up with Thomas Tuchel when England begins its UEFA Nations League campaign in September.
