Rodri Overcomes ACL Doubts, Returns Ahead of World Cup

Rodri said he questioned whether he would ever play again during his ACL rehabilitation. The Spain international now declares he is back, stronger than before, as he prepares for the FIFA World Cup in North America. He ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during Manchester City’s 2-2 draw with Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium in September 2024. The injury triggered an 18‑month recovery that featured a premature return at the FIFA Club World Cup and later hamstring and groin setbacks. Speaking to DAZN España, Rodri described a moment of doubt when pain and limited mobility made him wonder if he could ever play professional football again. He added that overcoming the mental hurdle helped him emerge stronger. Rodri’s return to form in the second half of the previous season coincided with Manchester City’s wins over Arsenal, Chelsea and Brentford that kept the Premier League title race alive. Pep Guardiola had predicted in October that the “best Rodri” would arrive at the World Cup and the next season, a forecast that now appears fulfilled. Rodri is currently part of Spain’s squad at the FIFA World Cup in North America. His contract situation with Manchester City will be decided after the tournament, while Real Madrid’s presidential election looms in the background.
