Ajax eyes striker Artem Dovbyk after Girona success
Ajax have formally inquired about 28‑year‑old Ukrainian striker Artem Dovbyk, who scored 24 goals for Girona last season to secure a historic third‑place finish in La Liga, after his €38.5 million transfer to AS Roma proved under‑whelming.
Italian commentator Enrico Camelio and the outlet Calciomercato reported that Ajax is the only club to have approached Dovbyk.
Under the guidance of Míchel at Girona, Dovbyk enjoyed his best career season, netting 24 goals and leading the Catalan side to a historic third place in Spain’s top flight.
His move to AS Roma commanded a €38.5 million fee; in his first Serie A campaign he scored 12 goals in 32 matches, but managed only three in 14 appearances the following season before a hamstring injury sidelined him since January.
Now that his physical problems have receded, Roma appear to be seeking a solution, having already added striker Donyell Malen to their ranks.
Calciomercato noted that coach Gian Piero Gasperini has no objection to a transfer, though Roma would still hope to receive €23 million.
Míchel, who knows Dovbyk’s qualities, believes he can once again extract the best from the 41‑cap Ukrainian international, as he did at Girona.
Dovbyk’s 41 appearances for Ukraine underline his experience at the international level.
