Ajax's loan gamble on veteran keeper after Barcelona salary cap
Marc‑André ter Stegen, the 34‑year‑old German goalkeeper, is poised to leave FC Barcelona after twelve years for a loan spell at Ajax. The move comes as Barcelona’s new salary‑cap regime, introduced by Alex Kroes, makes a permanent transfer financially unviable.
Ajax opened the pursuit through technical director Jordi Cruijff, who leveraged his connections with the Spanish club to negotiate the loan. The Dutch side intends to shoulder only a modest portion of ter Stegen’s wages, relying on Barcelona’s goodwill to finalise the deal.
In August 2023 ter Stegen extended his Barcelona contract to mid‑2028, yet he featured in just ten matches over the last two seasons because of a torn knee tendon and a lingering back problem. These injuries curtailed his playing time and opened the door for alternatives.

Earlier this year he spent a brief loan at Girona, where Míchel was head coach, but a hamstring injury limited him to two appearances before the end of January. Girona, where he shared the squad with Daley Blind and Donny van de Beek, were relegated from La Liga in May. Ter Stegen has indicated that the switch to Ajax is appealing, noting that he has been overtaken at Barcelona by Wojciech Szczesny and Joan García. The German keeper sees the Dutch club as a chance to revive his career.Ajax ready to shoulder ter Stegen’s wages as loan nears completion
Barcelona signed ter Stegen in 2014 from Borussia Mönchengladbach, and he won the Champions League in his first season. He later added seven La Liga titles and six Copa del Rey trophies, remaining the first‑choice goalkeeper until 2024. Internationally, he earned 44 caps for Germany, largely serving as backup to Manuel Neuer. The expectation is that ter Stegen will travel to Amsterdam in the coming days to complete his medical examination and finalize the loan paperwork. Ajax’s technical staff anticipate his arrival will bolster the squad ahead of the new campaign.
