Alvaro Arbeloa outlines Real Madrid coaching principles

Alvaro Arbeloa says his spell as Real Madrid first‑team manager offers little direct guidance for Fulham. He notes that when he was promoted from Real Madrid Castilla – which sat fourth in its Primera RFEF group – he could not simply be himself at the senior club.

At Castilla, Arbeloa built a side around offensive joy, emphasizing possession and pressing without the ball. The nominal 4‑3‑3 often morphed into a 4‑2‑3‑1 as a midfielder pushed forward, and intensity remained non‑negotiable.

Arbeloa cites Rafa Benitez at Liverpool for obsessing over individual player improvement, Manuel Pellegrini at Real Madrid in 2009 for valuing pace and free‑wing play, and Jose Mourinho at the Bernabeu for demanding maximum effort daily. He adds that Carlo Ancelotti and Vicente del Bosque taught him that tactics alone are insufficient without group management.

According to Arbeloa, a coach who cannot manage the group is doomed to fail, regardless of how sharp his tactical ideas are.
