Atletico Madrid’s Rodri reunion ruled out, City’s plans stay intact

🇬🇧

Rodri’s potential return to Atletico Madrid has been firmly ruled out this summer, with Spanish journalist Rubén Uría declaring there is "no possibility whatsoever, absolutely none". The 30‑year‑old Manchester City midfielder, 2024 Ballon d’Or winner, is entering the final year of his Etihad contract.

Earlier this summer, reports linked Real Madrid with a move for Rodri as clubs assessed the feasibility of signing the Spain international. Direct communication between the two clubs was understood to have taken place while his contract situation generated considerable interest.

Rodri is set to undergo surgery on a new injury and will miss the start of Manchester City’s season. The setback arrives as new manager Enzo Maresca prepares to build his midfield around the defensive midfielder.

Atletico Madrid’s reported interest in reuniting with the academy graduate was picked up across the Spanish press, adding another layer to the speculation. Uría’s unequivocal denial leaves no room for a summer reunion with the club where Rodri began his career.

Manchester City have maintained a firm position on Rodri, viewing him as a central figure in Maresca’s plans for the 2026‑27 campaign. Director of football Hugo Viana is not believed to have entertained the prospect of sanctioning a departure at this stage.

Real Madrid’s interest remains the most concrete external threat to Rodri’s stay at the Etihad, and the denial of Atletico’s involvement narrows the field of credible suitors. The club’s focus now centres on retaining the Ballon d’Or holder for the upcoming season.
