Barcelona and Wembley vie for 2029 Champions League final

Barcelona are finalising their bid to host the 2029 UEFA Champions League final at the Spotify Camp Nou and plan to submit the dossier to UEFA on Tuesday or Wednesday ahead of the Wednesday deadline. Wembley Stadium has emerged as the only other candidate, leaving a two‑horse race for the event. The Barcelona proposal is backed by the Spanish Government, the Generalitat of Catalonia, the Barcelona City Council and the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF). If approved, the renovated Camp Nou would hold 104,600 spectators, making it the largest stadium in Europe. A Champions League final at the venue would be the third in its history, following the 1989 final between Milan and Steaua Bucharest and the 1999 final where Manchester United beat Bayern Munich. Wembley, by contrast, has hosted eight finals and would be seeking a ninth. A possible complication is the 2027 final, already scheduled for Spain’s Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid on 5 June 2027, raising questions about UEFA returning to the same country two years later. UEFA will decide the 2029 host at its Executive Committee meeting on 15 September.
