Barcelona dismiss Real Madrid transfer claims after four summer signings
Barcelona have rejected suggestions they were outmanoeuvred in the transfer market by Real Madrid after the capital club completed four signings this summer. The Catalan club’s strategy has centred on identifying a successor to Robert Lewandowski, with both Deco and Hansi Flick reportedly favouring Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez. Inside Camp Nou, the view is that Real Madrid signed players Barcelona evaluated but never prioritised.
Real Madrid entered the summer with urgency following two trophyless seasons and Florentino Perez’s re-election campaign. The additions of Bernardo Silva, Marc Cucurella, Denzel Dumfries and Ibrahima Konate were framed as part of a broader rebuild under Jose Mourinho. Barcelona, however, approached the market differently, viewing several of these players as luxury options rather than necessities.
Bernardo Silva had long pushed for a move to Barcelona but was told he would need to accept a reduced salary, wait for other priorities to be addressed and accept an uncertain starting role. With Pedri, Frenkie de Jong and Gavi ahead of him in midfield, as well as Dani Olmo and Fermin Lopez in attacking midfield, Barcelona saw him as a luxury addition.
Atletico Madrid open to selling julian Alvarez to Real Madrid
Cucurella offered himself to Barcelona after seeking an exit from Chelsea, but the club preferred Joao Cancelo for the left-back position. Barcelona considered him a strong player but not an essential target. Alejandro Balde remained their priority at left-back, and no room existed for another expensive left-back unless circumstances changed significantly. Balde ultimately joined Real Madrid after a call from Mourinho, completing his move within days. Barcelona viewed him as a strong player but not an essential target. Dumfries and Konate were also offered to Barcelona, but the club felt well covered on the right flank with Jules Kounde, Eric Garcia, Hector Fort and Xavi Espart. Inside Barcelona, the argument remains that Real Madrid signed players they evaluated but never placed at the top of their agenda. The club insists the true battle concerns players both sides genuinely prioritise, with Julian Alvarez remaining their real focus. Had Real Madrid convinced Alvarez ahead of Barcelona, the feeling inside Camp Nou would have been very different.
