Barcelona extend Andreas Christensen's contract by two years

Barcelona and Danish defender Andreas Christensen have agreed to extend his contract by two seasons, with a termination clause effective June 2027. The deal, expected to be signed in the coming days, follows the expiry of his previous contract on 30 June after two injury‑hit seasons.

According to SPORT, the main reason behind Christensen’s renewal at Barcelona is Hansi Flick’s confidence in the player. Flick values his experience, reliability and versatility, believing he remains an important squad option when fit.

Christensen can operate as a central defender or in midfield, adding another dimension to his game. Flick sees him as an ideal player to strengthen squad depth for a season in which Barcelona hope to compete on every front.

Barcelona’s sporting department regards Christensen as a model professional who has never caused issues behind the scenes. He has consistently put the team first, even assisting the administrative registrations of Dani Olmo and João Cancelo.

The new contract includes a significantly reduced salary, which helps Barcelona lower their wage bill. President‑elect Joan Laporta clarified that after Christensen’s knee injury in December, the club would not abandon a player whose contract was nearing its end and would offer a renewal on revised financial terms. Christensen arrived from Chelsea on a free transfer in the summer of 2022. A partial tear of the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in December kept him out until the final league match against Valencia. The previous campaign saw Achilles tendon problems and a muscular injury restrict him to six appearances in Flick’s first season. Across the last two years injuries have prevented the centre‑back from building continuity, yet the club has never seriously considered moving on.

The hope inside the club is that his recent run of bad luck ends and he can rediscover the form he displayed during his first season in Catalonia.
