Barcelona joins race for Manchester City defender Josko Gvardiol

Barcelona have entered the race for Manchester City defender Josko Gvardiol, becoming a third genuine contender. Manchester City are blocking all offers and focusing on extending Gvardiol’s contract at the Etihad Stadium. Barcelona are reportedly offering a transfer fee of over €80 million plus bonuses for the 24‑year‑old Croatian defender. The figure sits below Manchester City’s stated minimum valuation of €90 million, which Viana has consistently defended. Manchester City director of football Hugo Viana and incoming manager Enzo Maresca consider Gvardiol a cornerstone of their defensive plans for the 2026‑27 season. Their strategy centres on securing a new deal rather than entertaining bids. Real Madrid remains the only other plausible destination, with Bayern Munich already ruled out. Earlier reports had framed Gvardiol’s options as a choice between a new City contract or a move to Real Madrid. Direct talks between Gvardiol and Maresca are expected after the FIFA World Cup, where the Croatia international will represent his national team. Those discussions will likely determine whether the improved City offer is accepted or Barcelona and Real Madrid gain ground.
